La Cité de la Mer

Ravalet Castle
This castle from the Renaissance was built between 1562 and 1575 by Jean II de Ravalet, lord of Tourlaville, on the site of a medieval manor. It is located in the heart of a magnificent botanic garden, with wonderful greenhouses.

Cherbourg Theatre
This monument dated the XIX th century, was built between 1880 and 1882 on the site of the former grain market. The project was entrusted to the architect Charles de Lalande (1833-1887) who also designed the theatre from La Renaissance (1874) and the theatre of the Novelties (1879) in Paris. Cherbourg Theatre is equipped with a stage with a 4% which enables to produce an illusion effect. When it was built, it was provided with 13 settings enabling 42 transformations thanks to which one could perform Vaudeville, Comedy, Drama, Operetta, Light Opera and the Opera. The audience is split into the orchestra, the stalls and three levels of balconies.

At any time, you can draw alongside Chantereyne Harbour. After crossing « La plage verte », lined with exotic shrubs, you arrive in the town centre. Here are shops, pedestrian streets, the thousands of ways of a town which await for you. Before getting back to the shore, you will have to stroll in the narrow streets, and to discover De Gaulle square and the Theatre, real model Garnier palace.

The big parks and gardens of Cherbourg and its suburbs were born in this European XIX th century which wanted to seize the world and among other things its plant species. In this field, that one was quite successful and the outcome can be seen especially in Cherbourg-Octeville.
